If you are approaching a street-railway grade crossing, you must stop your vehicle at least fifteen feet in front of the closest railroad track rail and remain stopped until it is safe to move whenever: (a) you see a signal indicating the immediate approach of a rail road train; (b) a crossing gate is lowered down in front of your vehicle; (c) a flagman signals you to stop for an approaching or passing train; (d) you hear a train that is dangerously close to passing over the railroad grade crossing blow its horn or whistle ; or (e) you can see an approaching train that is dangerously close to passing over the railroad grade crossing. 3. Driving Through, Around Or Under Railroad Crossing Gate-VTL§ 1170(b):
You must not drive your vehicle through, around, or under any crossing gate or barrier at a street -railway crossing while the gate or barrier is closed or is being opened or closed. When approaching a street -railway grade crossing -unless otherwise directed by a police officer or a traffic control device- you must stop between fifteen to fifty feet of the closest rail to listen and look for approaching trains or signs warning of approaching trains if you are driving: (a) any bus carrying passengers; (b) any school bus; (c) any motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of greater than ten thousand pounds that transports division 2.3 chlorine; (d) any cargo tank with a gross vehicle weight rating- loaded or empty- of greater than ten thousand pounds that is used to transport hazardous material; (e) any vehicle required to be marked or placarded; (f) a vehicle carrying explosive substances or flammable liquids as cargo; (g) a crawler type tractor; (h) a steam shovel; (i) a derrick, a roller; equipment having a normal operating speed of less than ten miles per hour; or (j) equipment having vertical body or load clearance of less than one-half inch per foot of the distance between any two adjacent axles or in any event of less than nine inches, measured above the level surface of a roadway. You must remain so stopped until you can safely proceed. You must make any gear changes needed to cross the tracks without making any other gear changes before beginning to cross the track or tracks. You must not change gears while crossing the track or tracks. 10. Failure To Stop For Stop Sign-VTL §1172(a):
Unless a police officer directs otherwise, when approaching a stop sign you must stop at the stop line. If there is no stop line you must stop before entering the crossing walk. If there is no stop line or crosswalk, you must stop before entering the intersection at location where you can see approaching traffic traveling on the intersecting roadway. 15. Failure To Stop For A Stopped School Bus-VTL §1174(a):
While traveling on any roadway you must stop before reaching any school bus that has stopped to receive or discharge passengers with its red lights activated even if it is located on the opposite side of a divided highway and you must remain stopped until the school bus begins to move again or you are signaled by the bus driver or a police officer to proceed. You must also stop before reaching a bus that is stopped because another bus in front of it has stopped to receive or discharge passengers. These rules apply to all roadways including school entrances, exits and parking lots. 17. Obstructing Traffic At An Intersection-VTL §1175:
You must not drive your vehicle into an intersection when there is traffic stopped in front of you on the other side of the intersection unless you are making a turn at the intersection or there is sufficient room on the other side of the intersection to fit your vehicle even if there is a traffic control signal permitting you to proceed.
